Scaling a non-profit's community work through systems change approach and government partnership
Safe in India focuses on enabling factory workers' to access the accident benefits through India's social security laws. In 2024, through a user research and design workshop, I co-created the template for pivoting their strategy to work with government and impact injured factory workers through systems change.
Design workshop for scaling strategy
Problem: Safe in India is a non- profit based in India. Its existing programs support injured factory workers to access disability oriented social security benefits. They aim to scale up their community focused work based in two districts of a North Indian state to the whole state to support disabled citizens. The challenges of scaling involve designing a government relations strategy aimed at systems change in the rules and processes of scheme implementation in the state.
Workshop aim: I designed a workshop to showcase the process of strategizing for scaling their solutions for citizens in the state. The workshop documented the targeted citizen journey map and key blockers in the journey. The exercise allowed the participants to connect dotes of evidence in the ground with interventions at scale.
Government as a partner for solutioning
Problem: To design the strategy for scaling the organization's learning from community work, I decided to capture the mindset of employees about the idea of systems change through government partnerships.
Insights: I used empathy map as a tool to understand the connection of the team's perception of government systems keeping in mind their experiences of working with citizens on the ground. I conducted an exercise with organizations employees and mapped their ideas. It provided insights into their difficult experiences of dealing with government services and the suffering of disabled workers.
Scaling strategy goal prototype
Design strategy end goal:
Based on the empathy mapping exercise and citizen user journey mapping exercise, I designed a contextual goal framework for the team. The objective of sharing a goal framework was to build the first goal prototype for the organization on their journey to build government partnerships and a strategy for using community embedded insights for systems change across the state.
